The number of foreign holidaymakers to Hanoi during this year’s Lunar New Year (Tet) Festival increased sharply reaching 120,000, reported the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Travelers came from traditional markets such as Japan, Russia, France, the United States, the Republic of Korea and the United Kingdom.
The rise was attributable to a growing number of overseas Vietnamese who returned to the home country as the city is hosting celebrations of the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi and the National Tourism Year.
Thanks to a longer Tet holiday, the number of outbound tourists also surged remarkably to some 20,000, mainly to Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. Meanwhile, domestic holidaymakers on this occasion numbered 1 million despite a 20% rise in tour costs, the department said.

Mount Tu Tram is located in Phung Chau Commune, Chuong My District, Hanoi.Nature has endowed Mt. Tu Tram with picturesque caves and caverns. Long Tien is the most beautiful cave. About 20km southwest of Hanoi, along Highway 6, stands a limestone mountain amid a prosperous plain offering relic of Tu Tram Mountain.
When visiting the spot, the traveller is usually told the story of Mt. Tu Tram. In ancient times, the brightest and finest star of the heavens, Tu Vi, suddenly fell from the sky and has transformed into a mountain. The local people named it Mt. Tu Tram. In the Le Dynasty, in the seventh year of Canh Tri, 1669, a text was carved in the stone half way up its walls. The mountain was then called Mt. Long Chau or Mt. Phat Tich (the mountain embracing relics and traces of the Buddha).
Hanoi is famous for its speciality green rice flake cakes which are sold in Hang Than street. Hang Than is just among more than 20 culinary streets in Hanoi which has about 70 streets with their first name of Hang.
This 300 metre long street houses more than 30 green rice flake cake shops. The Nguyen Ninh trademark is the oldest and most popular brand for green rice flake cake. The name was established in 1865 by late Tran Thi Luan and adopted it’s current name of Nguyen Ninh in 1928.
There have been 5 generations of Nguyen Ninh making green rice flake cake so far, said Mrs Nguyen Thi Hiep, a fourth generation family member.
In the morning, tour guide and driver will pick you up at hotel around 7:30 – 8:00 then transfer to visit Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, One-Pillar Pagoda, Ho Chi Minh Museum, Tran Quoc Pagoda, and Temple of Literature.
Lunch in local restaurant and then continue to visit Hoa Kiem Lake, Ngoc Son Temple, and Historical Museum. Drop off at your hotel at the end of the day.

In the light of an autumn day, a circuitous path, the smell from ripe rice fields, more than 1000 houses made from laterit still contain many old and charming beauties. There are no busy shops, no crowded streets, no loud sounds of engines, no bargaining between sellers and buyers but the sound of silence. All the streets of Hanoi sleep in the color of the night. Hanoi appears much more romantic and beautiful than it in the day time when the night comes.
